Heidelberg Township dairy farmer, David Wolfskill, was recognized by the Berks County Commissioners in February for being awarded a national championship for the corn he raised in 2008.  The National Corn Growers Yield Contest had nearly 5,000 contestants from all over the country competing for top honors.  David's entry was a corn hybrid from the DEKALB company (DKC61-69) which produced 297 bushels per acre on David's Class A soils in the no-till non-irrigated category.  In Berks County, the average per acre yield for corn is 130 bushels, in comparison. David commented that he treats his test plot the same as the rest of the 1,300 acres he farms with his family.  "I may push the population a bit, but that's it," he commented to the Commissioners during the February 10th Workshop.  Wolfskill commented that Berks County is unique in the world, along with its neighboring counties, for having the most fertile land that can grow the largest variety of crops without having to irrigate.  He stressed the need to preserve these  farms and their rich soils for the future.  His parents, Mark and Nancy Wolfskill, have preserved their farms.  Mark has served his community on the Berks Conservation District Board of Directors for 40 years.
